Our Standard for Natural

aloe vera plant

At JOHNSON’S®, over 90% of the ingredients
in our washes, lotions, and shampoos are of natural origin.

How We Calculate the 90%

Since there is no regulatory definition of “natural,” we follow the clear definitions and criteria set by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifically ISO 16128, for natural and organic cosmetic ingredients. ISO collaborates with experts from around the globe to establish standards that ensure the reliability and trustworthiness of products and services.

Our team of scientists uses ISO 16128 to evaluate the natural and natural origin indexes of the ingredients we include in our formulations, enabling us to accurately calculate the percentage of naturality in our products by weight of ingredients.

Natural ingredients are cosmetic ingredients obtained only from plants, animals, micro-organisms or minerals.

Naturally derived ingredients are cosmetics ingredients of greater than 50 % by molecular weight natural origin, renewable carbon content, or any other relevant methods, obtained through defined chemical and/or biological processes with the intention of chemical modification. The degree of natural origin is generally based on molecular weight or by renewable carbon.

Based on that definition, over 90% of the ingredients in our washes, lotions and shampoos are of natural origin. (That’s average cumulative volume, including water.)

We know natural ingredients aren’t always safe for baby in their natural form. So before we add them to our products, we put them through a series of steps in order to:

  • Remove impurities

  • Improve touch and feel

  • Reduce malodor or discoloration

  • Enhance performance and safety

While there may be natural alternatives to some of our synthetic ingredients, each comes with a tradeoff.

  • For example, some plant-based ingredients like essential oils often introduce higher levels of allergens. Regardless of whether an ingredient is of natural origin or synthetic, we only use ingredients that have passed our strict safety assurance process and that are verified by outside doctors, nurses, scientists and tested with thousands of volunteers around the world.
