Wash product vs. water RCT

This prospective randomised controlled non-inferiority trial compared the effect of JOHNSON’S® Baby Top-To-Toe® Bath vs. water alone on trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) in newborns.

TEWL (the amount of water that escapes from the skin) is higher in newborns than in older babies, showing that the skin barrier is less mature. This means that newborns are likely to be more vulnerable to threats in their environment.

Newborn babies (n=307) were randomly assigned to either washing with Top-To-Toe® Bath or water on a 1:1 ratio. After 2 weeks, Top-To-Toe® Bath was shown to be non-inferior to water alone in terms of trans-epidermal water loss (12.8 g/m2/h for the wash group vs. 12.5 g/m2/h, p=0.880).

After 4 weeks, the secondary endpoint of hydration was statistically greater in the Top-To-Toe® Bath group, but not to a clinically significant extent. There were no other significant differences in other secondary endpoints.

After the study, mothers in the Top-To-Toe® Bath group were more likely to continue with the wash regimen than in the water alone group. This suggests a preference for the JOHNSON’S® Baby product.
