The trial & results

A bit of background

As the makers of JOHNSON'S® Baby, we have a deep understanding of newborn skin, and how it's significantly different to adult skin. We know that it's important to develop products which are clinically proven mild and gentle to provide the best care for your baby's delicate skin.

We are also aware that there's a lot of conflicting advice about what is best to use when cleansing newborn skin, but very little evidence to support it. This is why we provided two of our products for testing in the biggest independent randomised clinical trial ever held on newborn cleansing, to find the proof to reassure mums who instinctively want to use a gentle wipe to clean baby's bottom, or a gentle cleanser at bathtime.

The trial

An expert team at the University of Manchester set out to put the safety of two JOHNSON'S® Baby cleansing products to the ultimate test by comparing their effects on healthy newborn skin, to water alone (bathing) and water and cotton wool (nappy changing). The largest randomised clinical trial on newborn cleansing (the gold standard in scientific research) ever held, involved 587 newborns and their mums.

The trial took place at mums' homes, so that the products could be tested in the location where they are actually used. Midwives gently took some simple, but key measurements:

  • The amount of water lost through baby's skin
  • The hydration of baby's skin
  • The overall health of baby's skin

The results

JOHNSON'S Baby TOP-TO-TOE® Bath trial

JOHNSON'S® Baby TOP-TO-TOE® Bath was proven to maintain the skin barrier as well as water alone.

JOHNSON'S® Baby Extra Sensitive Wipes trial

JOHNSON'S® Baby Skincare Extra Sensitive Wipes matched water and cotton wool in keeping newborn skin hydrated. Mums also reported significantly less nappy rash when using the wipes compared with using water.

So what does this mean?

These findings are crucial in supporting the decisions that many mums are already making - JOHNSON'S® Baby TOP-TO-TOE® Bath and JOHNSON'S® Baby Extra Sensitive Wipes are just as safe on newborns' delicate skin as water alone, right from the very first day.
